"It's still very much a long shot. But if you want to see the heavenly version of demolition derby, place your hopes on Asteroid 2007 WDS. That's the asteroid now moving close enough to Mars that astronomers estimate there's a 3.5 to 4 percent chance it will actually smash into the Red Planet at the end of the month. "That means there is a 96 percent chance it won't," said Kelly Beatty, executive editor of Sky & Telescope magazine. "But I would think astronomers would really like to see this happen." [link]
Yes its here...finally God has opened my letters n' made my wish come true aka "2007 WD5"....those pretty numbers is the name given to the asteroid that is hurtling through space and making its way through our very own solar-system...initially it had 1-in-75 chance of hitting Mars, then chances became 1-in-25 and now 1-in-28(3.6%)....if it misses then it will continue in its path n' probably someday crash into the 'third rock from the sun'...(keeping fingers crossd)...sadly from what i've read even if it crashes on earth, whole of the planet wont be destroyed only a metropolitan area...hopefully though it'll have longterm effects...(dinosaurs anyone?)....
The observatory, which is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of the city of Socorro, is operated primarily by New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and the University of Cambridge (England). It stands at an elevation of about 10,600 feet (3,180 meters).
Asteroid 2007 WD5 is a near-Earth object (NEO), which means that it could at some point in the future also have a chance of impacting our planet Earth."
