For the latter

Fasting struck the British as a thinly disguised method of coercion.
Gandhi was aware that his fasts exercised a moral pressure but the
pressure was directed not against those who disagreed with him but
against those who loved him and believed in him. He sought to prick the
conscience of the latter and convey to them something of his anguish at
a monstrous social tyranny.

Gandhi, who turned out to be a scientist of a different order, experimenting on various principles of life has been quoted in all kinds of struggles throughout the world be it environmental movements or humanitarian ones. It'd be wrong to use the phrase, 'Gandhi would be squirming in his grave', since that was already taking place on his last days with the massacre happening around the partition.
